Nosferatu (2024)
Lily-Rose Depp with the dark hand of Nosferatu creeping over her
Did I like it?
Yes.
Was it quality? Why?
Yes. Robert Eggers has a very unique signature vision. One that I am rather fond of. I find his films interesting, stunning, and challenging. Nosferatu is no exception. Each moment feels profound and lovingly crafted. The cast is stacked, with each star delivering memorable and interesting performances—most of all Lily-Rose Depp.
I will be utterly stunned if Depp misses out on an Oscar nomination.
Would I watch it again? Why?
Yes. I find all of Egger’s films to be rather rewatchable. I think it is partially due to how beautiful they tend to be. Nosferatu has been marketed as a horror, which is a genre that generally lacks rewatchability. However, the moments that do draw from horror (heightened suspense, jump scares, etc.) are not the foundation of the movie. That is to say, the film doesn’t rely on those tropes to deliver the story.
Do I think it is accessible? Why?
This isn’t a film for everyone, but should be accessible for most people that love movies. It’s not truly a horror movie, which sits well with me as someone that isn’t that genre’s biggest fan, yet still delivers moments that thrill the audience. Perhaps one where you’d need to be in the mood for a dark film, but still should be considered a must watch.
